American Council of Spotted Asses History Page |
Dave Parker of Billings, MT had the original idea of starting an organization called "The American Council of Spotted Asses" back in 1967... |
...Dave had been raising donkeys and had kept breeding records on them since 1962. But is
wasn't until 1967 that Dave bought his first spotted, or pinto, donkeys
at a large Centennial horse sale held in Billings. In September of 1969 Dave and his long
time friend John Conter, also of Billings, joined together and incorporated "The
American Council of Spotted Asses.
They actively started buying and trading Spotted Asses wherever they could find them. They
decided to set up a registry of Spotted Ass owners and also develop a line of Spotted Ass
labeled products (mugs, t-shirts etc.). The "SAPs Club" was also formed for
those people who loved asses - Spotted or spotless- and either owned or patted one on
the back. Each member received a wallet-size bronze card with his or her name engraved on
the back. These cards are now carried by hundreds of members who are proud of being Spotted
Ass Promoters. During the years different strains of assess have been developed to
carry packs, pull a cart, or to run in races.
In 1974 Parker was required to sell his Spotted Ass herd due to health problems and John,
along with his wife Claire Conter took over the management of the association and have run
it for the past 23 years.
The American Council of Spotted Asses (ACOSA) is now an established donkey breed and the registered Spotted Asses, regardless of size, bring a premium price at the public sales and on the private market. In the past ten years there has been a remarkable increase in the quality and quantity of Spotted Asses in the public eye.
The American Council of Spotted Asses has been publicized in numerous magazines throughout the United States and has also been featured on NBC's Today Show
