The Spotted-Ass Ranch is a multi-purpose
outdoor recreational facility, specializing in traditional activities (a place for the Kids, big and
small to come and play).
Sporting Clays simulates hunting and takes place in a natural environment. Clay targets present themselves
to shooters from all different angles and distances. Actual and perceived flight is affected by a variety
of factors (wind, sun, background, and terrain). The Trap and Skeet shooters have little advantage over the
bird hunter here. Sporting Clays test a person's overall shotgun skills and abilities. Sporting Clays is
the complete shotgun game.
Overlooking the Yellowstone River, the course at The Spotted-Ass Ranch follows the original stage trail, and
winds a mile and a half through rimrocks, pine trees and a cottonwood bottom. The Spotted-Ass Ranch has two 50
bird Sporting Clays courses. That makes up two halves to a 100-bird adventure.
The "Top Half" or "Sky Course" stretches through the hills and gullies typical of Eastern
Montana's Yellowstone River Valley. The targets in the hills are a
different breed. Mostly thrown from heights well over the shooter's head,
these birds can be seen clearly against Montana's Big Sky. Shooters have
more time to mount their guns here, but this "pass shooting" course
challenges in a different way.

The "Bottom Half" ,or the "Cottonwoods", treks down through a Cottonwood
bottom among the trees and thickets. Most of these birds are presented
below the shooters and fly downhill, flush shooting is the name of the
game here. Sometimes a shooter has only an instant to pick out a bird and
get a shot off before the clay disappears into the brush.
Each shooting position
(station) is constructed to insure a natural setting while maximizing
safety with "fail-safe" swing restrictors. The entire Sporting Clays
course in connected by an improved path and accommodates sporting clay
carts for those who do not wish to walk.
